Father Rick’s Two Minute Homily for Saturday, 7th Week in Easter
May 23, 2026, John 21 20-25
Who Do You Want to Be Like?
After graduating from high school, I completed my novitiate. I took my first vows with the religious order, the Institute of Charity. Then I went to England for my studies, and I soon discovered that the students in my class had already completed the equivalent of 2 years of college. I knew I had a lot of catching up to do.
Without realizing it, I started comparing myself to the other students. I want to be like them. I know what St. Peter experienced when he allowed St. John to distract him. So, he asked Jesus at the Last Supper, “What about him?”
Jesus returned with a remark like, ‘Mind your own business.’ “What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours?” Then He told Peter he had only one thing to concern him, “You follow Me.”
Jesus told Martha in the gospel that when she complained to Jesus that Mary wasn’t helping her in the kitchen. Jesus responded, “Mary has chosen the better part, and it shall not be taken from her.” Stay in your lane.
Gospel Challenge: Are we distracted in our prayer or work, comparing ourselves to others? Do we wish we were like someone else? Why choose to be like a “lesser part?”
When we choose to be like Jesus, we have all the parts. He promised to wash our feet and do everything else we needed. Focus! Focus! Focus on Jesus! Anything else is a waste of time.
