OCIA: Exploring the Catholic Faith
A Journey of Faith, Belonging, and Discovery
Are you curious about the Catholic faith? Perhaps you have been thinking about becoming Catholic, or you were baptized Catholic but never completed your Sacraments of Initiation. Maybe you simply have questions about what Catholics believe and how Catholics live their faith.
OCIA may be the place for you.
At Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Seminole, OCIA stands for the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is the process through which adults learn about the Catholic faith, grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ, and discern whether God is calling them to become part of the Catholic Church.
OCIA is not simply a class you have to pass. It is a journey of prayer, learning, conversation, and discernment, accompanied by members of our parish community.
Who Is OCIA For?
OCIA is especially intended for adults who:
- Have never been baptized and are interested in becoming Christian and Catholic.
- Were baptized in another Christian tradition and are considering entering into full communion with the Catholic Church.
- Were baptized Catholic but did not receive Confirmation and/or First Holy Communion.
- Are simply interested in learning more about Catholicism and exploring whether the Catholic Church is where God is calling them.
You do not need to have all the answers before you begin. You are welcome to come with questions, doubts, curiosity, or simply a desire to learn.
What Happens During OCIA?
OCIA is a gradual process rather than a single course or event. Along the way, participants have opportunities to:
- Learn what Catholics believe and why.
- Explore Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Catholic Church.
- Discover the meaning and beauty of the Sacraments.
- Experience Catholic prayer and worship.
- Ask questions and discuss matters of faith in a welcoming environment.
- Meet other people who are exploring or deepening their Catholic faith.
- Spend time discerning God’s call for their lives.
The process recognizes that faith is more than learning information. It is an encounter with Jesus Christ and a journey toward a deeper relationship with God and His Church.
A Journey, Not a Checklist
Every person’s faith journey is unique. Some people know from the beginning that they want to become Catholic. Others take time to ask questions and discern their next step.
There is no pressure to become Catholic simply because you participate in OCIA. The process respects each person’s freedom and recognizes that conversion and faith develop over time.
As participants grow in faith, they may eventually discern that they are ready to receive the Sacraments of Initiation:
- Baptism
- Confirmation
- Eucharist
For those already baptized, the path toward full communion with the Catholic Church is different from that of someone who has never been baptized. Our OCIA team will help you understand the process that applies to your circumstances.
What If I’m Just Curious?
That’s perfectly okay.
You don’t have to know whether you want to become Catholic before reaching out. OCIA is an opportunity to come and see—to ask questions, learn about the Catholic faith, and discover what God may be inviting you to do.
You are welcome whether you are taking your first steps toward faith or have been thinking about Catholicism for years.
Ready to Take the Next Step?
If you are interested in OCIA or would simply like to talk with someone about the Catholic faith, we invite you to reach out. There is no obligation and no pressure—just an invitation to explore.
