Fr. Rick’s Three Minute Homily for Sunday – 01-16-2022

Sunday 2nd Week in Ordinary Time 2022

 Growing up isn’t always easy. I couldn’t wait to get to the ballpark after school and meet up with about 15 friends to “Play Ball.” Of, course, there was Mom, waiting at the front door with the question, “How much homework do you have.” I thought, “Really Mom.” But I answered, “Only Math and Science.” She replied, “You know what to do. And when you finish your homework, don’t forget to finish mowing the back yard. Summer was great, no homework and I got my chores done early. “Play Ball” was the rest of the day and night.

Mother Mary approached Jesus at the wedding feast and said, “Son, they have no wine,” I wonder if Jesus thought, “Really Mom! My time has not come.” Whether Jesus did or didn’t think “Really Mom!,” He knew Mom was right. She said, to the waiters, “Do whatever He tells you.” She trusted Her Son to do the right thing for the Wedding family so they wouldn’t be embarrassed.

Amazing how Mother Mary felt their embarrassment. Amazing how she ignored Jesus’ rebuttal. She knew His heart. She knew He couldn’t refuse her. Whatever our age, we all have a mom who points out the right thing we need to do. It could be someone asking a favor. It could be Mother Church directing us to follow Jesus and not the world. It may take some pondering to figure out where we keep failing to do our homework first and not play ball.

Go to Mother Mary. Tell her how you feel in your heart about not doing the “right thing.” And then listen carefully as she says to you, “Do whatever He tells you.” Remember when we listen to Jesus, He can only give us the best wine. We won’t know what that is like until we taste it.
