Every morning I wake up, I am the man in the Gospel who can’t hear a thing God is saying to me or speak a Word of the Lord. How interesting that his friends brought him to Jesus to heal him. Of course, he couldn’t speak for himself. Notice that they begged Jesus to heal him. They wanted to hear this man speak his mind and heart.
For years I have gone before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament every morning to touch my ears that I may hear Him and touch my mouth so I may speak His Word to His people. My human words are just thoughts that express an opinion to be debated; God’s Word is alive and active. It is fresh. It’s like the first time, never spoken like this before. It is revealing and consoling. His Word is healing and forgiving. God knows what I need this moment and is ready to give it to me.
So, to receive that spoken Word of God, I ask Him to touch my ears that I may hear Him speak in my prayer and in everyone I am with that day. I ask Him to touch my lips that I may share His Word with others that day. Then, after listening to others and hearing what they need, I speak human words, and they hear God’s Word. It is fresh, new, healing, forgiving. How simple, but how profound.
A simple prayer for Jesus to touch our ears and our lips in prayer and with others is a blessing we pray with the priest prays before He reads the Holy Gospel at Mass: “May the Word of the Lord be on my mind, on my lips, and in my heart that I may hear and proclaim the Holy Gospel, in the Name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.”
