The blessings and woes Jesus mentions in the Beatitudes bring back a powerful memory. While snorkeling off the shore in Maui, Hawaii, I saw the beautiful mountains and islands in the distance. The panoramic view was breathtaking. However, it could not compare to what I saw when I put my face in the water. The color burst in my eyes as I feasted on the coral and the fish. My heart rejoiced in the beauty of God’s creation. It made me forget the beauty of the mountains. I am still rejoicing forty years later.
Living superficially on the surface of all that happens to us is like seeing the mountains. We take life at face value. All we can do is react to people and things that happen to us with little thought and purpose. Our reactions are usually subject to what’s happening inside us at the moment, worry and anxiety, or anger and fear. Then we must fix it. That is when troubles begin.
When we put our face into the water, life in all its fullness begins. There is a depth in us that we can penetrate only in the presence of Jesus. I can hear Jesus saying, “Do not be afraid. I’ve got this.” Jesus does his best work when we can do nothing. “Blessed are you who are poor. The kingdom of God is yours.”
Is there something that is causing you great anxiety and fear now? Do you want to hang up your anger and anxiety? Put your face in the water. Will Let the Lord wipe the tears from your face and the worry from your heart. Be courageous and be blessed by the Lord.
