Seven or eight years ago, maybe longer, I completed the 33 Days to Morning Glory (Fr. Michael Gaitley) and made the Consecration to Mother Mary. She has been a real presence in my life ever since. I want to say Mother Mary taught me how to pray, and it is the attitude she has about herself and toward God. So when Angel Gabrial announced that she would be the Mother of God, I could see her saying, “Me? Really? Indeed you can find somebody better than me.”
That is something I could find myself saying, not Mother Mary. That kind of thinking is false humility. But, no, for our Blessed Mother, it was all about what God wanted of her. She didn’t want to get in God’s way. “I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me as You say,” she replied to St. Gabriel.
Sometimes, I believe we get in God’s way when we pray. We ask God to do things for us as he told us to do in today’s Gospel, but “do it our way.” We limit the hand of the Lord in dealing with us. Jesus equates what we want with handing someone a stone when they ask for bread. We ask too little because our prayer is all about us. Let’s take Mother Mary’s lead and give it to God to “be done as He says.” No strings attached.
I pray all the time, “Oh Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything. “Ask” God what he wants to do and let Him do it. “Seek” for Him to ack and rest in trust that He will ack His way. Knock and keep knocking until you decrease and He increases.
Think of an intention you or someone needs. Then, surrender it to God, every last ounce of it. The smaller we get, the bigger God gets to ack in our situation. So pray with Mother Mary, “Let it be done to me as you say.” God’s More is Better.
