A few weeks ago, a boy in the 6th grade did something that made me stop and think. At the Sunday Masses, a presentation was given on the Catholic Ministry Appeal that compelled him to donate. So, his Mom told me he went home, opened his little safe, and took out $50 he was saving up for something he wanted to buy. But unfortunately, I forgot what he wanted to buy.
Jesus didn’t have to look very hard to find figs on this young boy’s tree. Over his young life, he put others before himself, even when it involved a sacrifice. You don’t give a huge amount like that out of the blue. His prayer life keeps Jesus present to him and little works of mercy every day made his heart generous. I imagine the sacrifices made him more excited than if he gave a smaller amount that didn’t cost him. He reminds me of the poor widow Jesus saw put two pennies in the basket.
Over the next few days, I invite you to ponder with me what Jesus is finding on our fig trees when he walks by. One time, Jesus said children would teach us. Kids don’t have the extra baggage we carry around every day. So perhaps we could all use some fertilizer and pruning to get to the good fruit in us that will please our Lord Jesus and produce more generous hearts for the good of others.
May the Lord enlarge our hearts to accomplish His design for others.
