NO BREAD, NO PIZZA.
Every Wednesday during the school year, we celebrate Mass with our school children. I do my best to think of ways to communicate the day’s gospel to them. I struggled at my computer, trying to think of something that could help them relate to the theme, Jesus is the Bread of Life. Nothing was coming, so I went to the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. I thought of the word pizza, and I was off to the races.
To make homemade pizza, you need a lot of ingredients and BREAD. But I am too busy to go shopping. So this is what I told them. “Making all that dough or bread for the pizza is too much bother. So, my friends, can I have pizza without the dough? Everybody – “No.” Of course not.
Now, all the ingredients in the pizza, the cheese, sausage, pepperoni, and mushrooms, make pizza tasty. But, we still need the bread to make the crust.
Jesus said, “I am the bread of life.” Life is all the stuff we do every day. We get up in the morning and eat breakfast. Then, please, God, we say our prayers. We go to school, listen to teachers, have PE, play sports against other teams after school, eat dinner, do our homework, and watch TV. That’s our life every day with many other things we do.
Jesus is like the dough that makes all the pizza ingredients stay together. I know that I don’t want to live Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday without receiving Jesus, the bread of my life, on Sunday. Do you?
My week without Jesus on Sunday is like pizza without a crust.
