When I read the gospel for Tuesday, the National Enquirer slogan, “Inquiring Minds Want to Know,” came to mind. Nicodemus is curious about Jesus, and he has to know for himself.
Has something ever been so important to you that you needed your space away from all the distractions? Meet Nicodemus, a leading Pharisee who sought Jesus at night. Did he meet Jesus at night because he wanted to keep it secret for his fellow Pharisees? Maybe. But notice that he isn’t full of himself in this private meeting, trying to trip Jesus up as his fellow Pharisees did. Instead, he is genuinely curious because his questions are seeking the Truth.
Nicodemus’s private encounter with Jesus gave him the courage to stand up for our Lord at His trial.” He asked the court whether judging a man without investing in the case was proper. The court asked if he was also a follower of Jesus. Nicodemus also came forward at the crucifixion of Jesus and buried his dead body in his family tomb.
Gospel Challenge:
Think about what that one private encounter with Jesus did for Nicodemus. We all struggle with things and questions about life that go unanswered. We can be with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament as much as Nicodemus was in the night. “Come to me, all you who labor and are overburdened, and I will give you rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28-30.)
