Sometimes in professional sports, players will have a fantastic year breaking all team records. Then those players look for a significant increase in their salary. Have you ever noticed sometimes the following years are not as productive? The magic disappeared.
Jesus left Jerusalem pretty disappointed. He cleansed the Temple of the moneychangers who were scamming the poor. The leaders wouldn’t accept doves and animals outside Temple, and the poor had to pay over 15 times for animals inside the Temple. Yes, there was price-gouging back then.
It would seem he took out his sadness on a fig tree that was too young to bear figs. “May no one ever eat fruit from you.” He was expressing the deep regret in his heart that he experienced in Jerusalem and had to leave because it broke His heart.
It’s a hard lesson to learn, but we must realize that what we do in church affects how we live outside those doors. Remember I told you my Mom asked me to do something because I love her? I can sign the cross at the beginning of Mass, thanking the Lord for inviting me to celebrate His Son’s meal with me.
I can feel the sorrow in my heart when I abused my love for Him and others by the sins I committed. Feeling the sorrow brings me into a relationship with the Lord. And relating to the Lord personally will affect how I connect with people when the priest dismisses me from Mass.
Gospel Challenge:
Give the Lord your all the next time you are in Mass. Relate with Him personally. You will bring the Lord to everyone you encounter, and watch out. Great things will happen when God mixes with us.
