Pope Paul VI wrote about evangelization that “modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses” (Evangelii Nuntiandi 41).
The witness of the sinful woman in this Gospel makes her a powerful evangelist. Her actions speak – even though she says no words at all! In lovingly wiping and anointing the feet of Christ, she bears witness to a love that changed her and the world.
I wonder if St. Paul heard the story of the sinful woman in today’s Gospel during his three-year catechumenate. He persecuted Jesus in His brothers and sisters (the Church) before his conversion. The love of Jesus overwhelmed Paul on the road when he was preparing to arrest followers of Jesus.
The Corinthians were deep in sinful behaviors. So, Paul told them, “I am the least of the Apostles,” because it doesn’t matter how grave and often they sinned, the grace of God’s merciful saves them – and us.
The sinful woman knew the love of Christ herself before she washed Jesus’ feet, so with St. Paul, she became a powerful witness to that love that saved her from the world.
Gospel Challenge:
Spend a moment after communion pondering someone you will see today. Think of what they may need and be ready to bring out the very best in them. Let your charity and welcome witness of Christ’s love for them.
