Sometimes, I will walk into the house, and someone is cooking. All of a sudden, I couldn’t wait to eat. Those pangs of hunger come out of nowhere. The same is true if I smell a steak on the grill. I imagine we all have that experience. You can’t rush a good steak. Neither can you rush a relationship with Jesus and someone.
The Pharisees are confronting Jesus again. This time, they ask Him for a sign to prove He is God. I doubt that they would believe in Jesus even if he flew. A sign is something that we can see and touch. Jesus waits for the right moment to let Him touch their hearts and believe. These fellas just don’t get it. Faith is a relationship, not something we can figure out or prove.
You can’t rush a relationship like you can’t rush a good steak. A young man will be disappointed if he asks his girlfriend to marry him before she is ready. However much he wants to marry her, he must wait for the right moment.
The same is true for someone coming to a deeper faith in the Lord. We can’t rush that relationship. Jesus knows the right moment when their heart will be open to His call. Remember Him telling the disciples that many are called, but few are chosen. We can call them all day and night, but Jesus knows when to choose someone to be His friend and future disciple.
Gospel Challenge: Meanwhile, let’s do all we can to be a friend to those on their spiritual journey. Show them every reason to follow Jesus through our love and care for them, day in and day out. The moment will come, and the taste will last forever. Remember, not everyone likes their steak rare.
