How often do we have plans, maybe golfing, and it is pouring down rain? Who wants to get wet? But what happens if you forget your plans and stand in the rain for a moment or two, experiencing its freshness and coolness in your spirit as it splashes on your face? Embrace the sacrament of the present moment.
The people of our Lord’s time just heard words he spoke (wet), not how they could change their lives (a fresh, new, calm spirit). They wanted a sign for Jesus to prove He was the Messiah (wet). Then, they wouldn’t have to enter a relationship with Him (a fresh, new, calm spirit).
Jesus offered them the sign of Jonah. Like Jonah was in the belly of a whale for three days, Jesus would be in the belly of the earth for three days until He rose. I wonder how long He will be in the belly of our lives until we experience the freshness of living with Him and for Him, moment by moment.
At the preaching of Jonah, the people repented. Lord Jesus, I am sorry for paying more attention to my thoughts and how I want things to go. I want to be your friend who trusts you enough for you to care for everything.
If it rains at my golf game, that’s ok. We will be together, Jesus. It will work out. This reminds us that we are never alone and can trust in God’s care.
