Our school put on the play Beauty and the Beast a few years back. After hearing confession from 6 to 7 pm, I caught the last 20 minutes of the play. When I walked into the parish center, all the lights were off. I could only see a few feet in front of me from the Light shining in from the entrance.
As I entered the parish center, the darkness enveloped me. But then, a miraculous transformation occurred. The lights came on, and a burst of color flooded my eyes. The children’s vibrant costumes and the lively background of the play captured my attention, and I was utterly immersed in the beauty of the moment. It was a powerful reminder of the transformative power of Jesus’ Light, which can dispel even the deepest darkness.
In today’s gospel, Jesus tried yet another image to reveal His identity to the Pharisees. Wow! They were so stubborn. They could not see the Light standing and speaking right before them. Imagine that!
Every time Jesus tried to turn on the Light in their minds and hearts, their human wills shut that door. I think of walking into the parish center that night, closing the door, stepping on people’s toes, bumping into them, and falling over. What nonsense!
This experience makes me think about how dark our sins keep us from seeing the Light of Jesus. Yet, he will keep shining on my mind and heart to reveal how gracious His mercy can be if only I don’t keep shutting the door.
We would have missed much in the play if the stagehand had never turned on the parish center lights. I invite you and your family and friends to embrace the Light shining in your darkness.
Confessions every evening continue Monday through Friday, 6-7 pm this week. How different and more beautiful the world Jesus sees and wants to see with you. Do not be afraid. Jesus will be there waiting for you. Peace.
