Fr. Rick’s Two Minute Homily for Wednesday, 22nd Week in Ordinary Time

“I Got This!

Do you remember Jacky Gleason’s famous line, “How sweet it is,” from the TV show The Honeymooners? How sweet it is to go to a friend’s house, put your feet up, maybe take a nap, or relax? That might have been something Jesus wanted to do when he went to Simon Peter’s house. But first, he had something more pressing. 

He knew Peter’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever, so he went to see her. Jesus is Lord and has authority over all illnesses and death. He is drawn to everything that afflicts us, as if two magnets attract each other. It’s as if he can’t help himself; healing is in his nature. 

Think of a teacher who knows when a student is struggling. The wise teacher doesn’t just assign more work or give extra time after class; they also provide guidance and support. Instead, they understand there’s a problem in the student’s life. A simple conversation, along with genuine care and concern for the student’s well-being, will reveal what is truly hurting. 

Jesus understands how pain and worry can distract us, like someone lying in bed with the door locked. You knock and ask, “Do you need anything?” but all you hear is a tired, grumbling voice inside saying, “Leave me alone.” 

Well, Jesus won’t leave us alone because of His compassion. He suffers with us. He enters our home, stands over us, and rebukes our fears in each of us right now. Listen as He addresses that fever and condemns it. 

Gospel Challenge: 

Even if we don’t know what keeps us trapped in our bed of pain, Jesus does. He has the power to heal our illnesses and even mend a broken heart. Keep repeating all day, “Jesus, I trust in you.” And listen as he says, “I got this.” His power is our hope, our reassurance.
