In today’s responsorial psalm, Jesus expressed a deeply painful question: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” He was profoundly wounded when his friends fell asleep while he suffered in Gethsemane, when Judas betrayed him, and when Peter denied knowing him. During our darkest moments, we can share our suffering and feelings of abandonment with Jesus, who understands and empathizes with us. He is aware of our pain and hurts alongside us. He recognizes how even the smallest sin can separate us from Him, especially those sins involving our loved ones. Nevertheless, he forgave us, praying, “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.”
Jesus, how uncomfortable it is to really contemplate what you did for me on the cross. Doing so brings me face-to-face with my own sin. I ask that you unite all of my sufferings today, whether big or small, with yours. I give you thanks for your sacrifice.
“Jesus, heal me from sin and bring me ever closer to you.”
“Mother Mary, we stand with you this Holy Week and share your sorrow under the cross of your Son, Jesus.”
