Father Rick’s Two Minute Homily for 5th Sunday in Easter A

Before GPS

It’s truly a blessing when someone calls needing a Sacrament, or when someone is near the end of life and can’t make it to church. I’m so grateful for GPS whenever I get into the car; it makes it so much easier. Before GPS, finding that house could be quite tricky. When I’d get lost, I’d often ask someone for directions, and sometimes, if they were driving, they’d kindly say, “Follow me.” That was such a comforting gesture—I didn’t have to worry about reading every street sign or trying to keep track.

I’m grateful to God for the kind person who topped what they were doing, showed me the Way, and drove me right to the house. And today, I also thank God for the invention of GPS, which is now easily accessible on our cell phones, making navigation so much simpler.

“Follow Me.” I picture Jesus in His Jeep coming toward me with a warm smile, saying, “Hey friend, you look a bit lost. Do you need some help finding your Way?” I chuckle and reply, “Well, that’s funny; I don’t really know where I’m headed. But I do know I want to get out of this mess. So, you could say I’m a little lost.” This image helps us feel Jesus’s caring presence, making us more open to trusting His guidance.

Sometimes, life can feel overwhelming. But the beautiful thing about Jesus is that He uniquely has the ultimate GPS for LIFE. He knows the Way because He’s already been there Himself. He is the WAY, and so, He can lead us too. We often think of this as eternal life—the life after death —but it’s also about experiencing Jesus’s life in us right now. His guidance is always near, offering us reassurance and peace as we find our Way to Him.

With GPS, I don’t need to see the house I’m heading to in advance. When I follow Jesus, I can relax and trust Him to lead the Way. The path He’s on is called “Peace,” and I know I’m on the right track when my heart feels calm. If I ever feel lost again, Jesus reminds us in the Gospel, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me.”

Gospel Challenge: So, pray, my friend, ‘O Jesus, I surrender my life to you (following Jesus); take care of everything.’ It’s a simple act that deepens our trust, helping us feel more connected and

confident in Jesus’s faithful guidance. Prayer becomes a way to strengthen our relationship with Him and to trust Him to live His fullness.
