There are many ways to pray. The Holy Mass is the Source and Summit of the Christian life. We also pray the Rosary, seek the intercession of saints, examine our consciences before bed, and before Confession. In today’s Gospel, Jesus says, “I have much more to tell you.” I see Jesus waiting for me to come to Him so He can speak to my heart. How does that work? One way I pray to hear what He says to me today is by being honest with Him. When I enter His Presence, I open my heart to Him, allowing Him to hold whatever is there. No words are needed. Interestingly, this way of praying clears away distractions and a busy mind. I then enjoy being in His Presence, like two old friends catching up. I open the Scriptures, maybe the daily Mass readings. I begin in His Presence, reading the first reading or Gospel, and pause. After a moment, I read it again, waiting for a word or phrase that catches my attention. I repeat that phrase over and over until I start hearing something. Then, I take out my pen and paper and start writing. We refer to this practice as Lectio Divina (Divine Reading). Occasionally, I sense that something is unfolding in my life, and the guidance of what to do emerges from that feeling. Sometimes, I hear a call to surrender to the Lord and step aside. It feels as if He is saying, “I Got This.” Gospel Challenge: Take a moment each day to listen to what Jesus is saying to you. He is the Word of the Lord and knows how to speak to us. What is God Saying To Me Today?
There are many ways to pray. The Holy Mass is the Source and Summit of the Christian
life. We also pray the Rosary, seek the intercession of saints, examine our consciences
before bed, and before Confession.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus says, “I have much more to tell you.” I see Jesus waiting for
me to come to Him so He can speak to my heart. How does that work?
One way I pray to hear what He says to me today is by being honest with Him. When I
enter His Presence, I open my heart to Him, allowing Him to hold whatever is there. No
words are needed. Interestingly, this way of praying clears away distractions and a busy
mind. I then enjoy being in His Presence, like two old friends catching up.
I open the Scriptures, maybe the daily Mass readings. I begin in His Presence, reading
the first reading or Gospel, and pause. After a moment, I read it again, waiting for a
word or phrase that catches my attention.
I repeat that phrase over and over until I start hearing something. Then, I take out my
pen and paper and start writing. We refer to this practice as Lectio Divina (Divine
Reading). Occasionally, I sense that something is unfolding in my life, and the guidance
of what to do emerges from that feeling. Sometimes, I hear a call to surrender to the
Lord and step aside. It feels as if He is saying, “I Got This.”
