Friends are the best; some endure for a while, while others last a lifetime. These lasting friendships are like a strong ship in a storm, able to withstand life’s challenges. The ones that endure are those who share their faith in the Lord and their lives, giving them a resilient quality that helps them overcome any hardship.
Friendships in Christ share more than the stuff of life. They are bound by the power of prayer, which unites both them and the Lord. When they pray together, they truly feel what their friends are going through and often sense what the other person needs before even asking. It’s a beautiful connection that strengthens their bond and faith.
Jesus and His disciples shared a close friendship. Jesus understood that His Passion would challenge His disciples and their loyalty. Fear is a painful emotion, and during the Last Supper, the disciples moved from confusion to panic as they realized Jesus was serious. He is going to suffer and die.’ Sometimes, friends experience this journey together through suffering.
The LORD understood their thoughts and fears, so He reassured them that His connection with the Father would sustain Him through His suffering. He also offered them this same strength. “In this world, you will face trouble ,but be courageously confident. I have already overcome the world.”
Gospel Challenge:
Have recent events affected your friendships? Remember, hope persists even through loss. Stay confident when you lose a friend. Turn to prayer, particularly before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Then, sit around the table with the disciples at the Last Supper. Pray over the words of today’s Gospel a few times, and listen to your heart. Our Lord will give you the courage to be a good friend, even when someone else isn’t, for whatever reason. Only Jesus can change a person’s heart.
