Our parents give us our names at birth, and those names stay with us throughout our lives. As teenagers, we usually get a driver’s license or an ID card. We often need this ID to board a plane, apply for a passport, or open a bank account, among other things.
The scribes and Pharisees were also trying to figure out who Jesus was, much like detectives on a case. He was busy performing miracles and teaching wherever He went, and huge crowds followed Him. It was important for them to understand more about Jesus before things got out of hand.
Jesus understood the situation and posed a thoughtful question that sounded like a puzzle. He reflected on how King David referred to the Messiah as “My Lord.” He wondered how David’s son could also be his Lord, prompting a deeper look at this intriguing relationship.
The crowds marveled, pondering the scribes and Pharisees’ question: could Jesus truly be the Messiah? They also noted elsewhere that they believed he came from Nazareth. However, Jesus was actually born in Bethlehem, the city of King David, the true birthplace of the long-awaited Messiah.
Gospel Challenge:
I want to take a moment to reflect on the presence of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle in the church. Am I living in a way that honors Jesus in my thoughts, words, and actions? When I step away from His Presence, do I still carry that sense of His divine presence in my interactions with others?
Please, God, may my faith deepen as I feel the Real Presence of Jesus wherever I go and with whomever I am with. In those moments, I will discover my true identity as His brother, sister, and friend.
