One day, my sister Bev and I were walking. She had a bag in her hand containing an envelope, a piece of paper, and her billfold. She stuck her hand in the bag, and the billfold was gone. We emptied the bag—no billfold. We held hands and prayed, “St. Anthony, something is lost that can’t be found. Help us look all around.” We took five steps. She put her hand in the bag and pulled out her billfold.
An alarm goes off inside us if we lose our billfold or keys. It can be anything small. I have noticed that when I lose something and pray to Saint Anthony, I sometimes go back to the same place I looked at before, and it’s there.
What about asking St. Anthony to help us find something more important than a billfold? Saint Anthony can help us find the love we have in our hearts for a family member or friend who has become an enemy because of hurt.
Beneath all pain and suffering lies Our Lord’s mercy and love for our enemies, which Jesus is willing to share with them. However, He can only do so through us. First, we need to sincerely repent of any anger and hatred we hold toward others and open our hearts to His grace.
These emotions occupy so much space in our hearts that Jesus struggles to reach us. “Help us to feel sorry, Lord. Some of us want to, but it’s difficult. We give up too quickly. We are so poor in spirit that we trust you will help us.”
Gospel Challenge:
“St. Anthony, someone’s lost and cannot be found. Help us look all around. Oh, Jesus, I surrender myself to You. Take care of everything.” Close your eyes and entrust everything to Jesus. He is fully capable of reconciling even the worst enemies. His mercy began on the cross with, “Father, forgive them. They know not what they do.” Let us carry on His mercy campaign.
