Once again, Jesus catches us off guard. Usually, he heals someone on the spot. But in today’s gospel with the ten lepers, he tells them to go on their way and to show themselves to the priest.
Amazingly, on their way, Jesus cured them. That might not seem surprising until you think He ordered them to act as though the healing had already occurred. They started down the road, their bodies still full of sores and their limbs falling off.
It’s the same beautiful gift of faith that Jesus asked of Peter when he called him to get out of the boat and walk on water with him. Faith in Jesus is most productive when there is no evidence to believe in him. His word is enough.
The joy of God’s love explodes in us. When we have nothing to give him but our ills and sorrows, He heals us as we go. When we have nothing to give him but our sinfulness, he says, “Your faith has saved you.”
Gospel Challenge: Let us rejoice in our nothingness and be grateful because God will do something extraordinary. And if we need help, pray with Mother Mary, “Let it be done to me according to your Word.”
