Imagine I show you a dollar bill in one hand and a penny in the other— which would you choose if you could pick just one? Think beyond money—what if you didn’t know how much more the dollar was worth compared to the penny? What truly holds value in your life?
Herod saw this in today’s gospel. Before him, a man in prison who could share the truth whenever he wanted. This king, who seemed to have everything, was actually worried about what others thought of him. Instead of grasping something far more precious than worldly possessions, he chose to cling to his small, fragile kingdom rather than seek the greatness of the Kingdom of God.
It took the cardinal virtue of courage to help him conquer his fear and discover something even greater. A wonderful way to begin is by asking ourselves, “What do I fear losing the most?” When our priorities are clear, it becomes easier to find the courage to stand up for what truly matters most. Just as John the Baptist prioritized his relationship with Jesus above all else, even his own life, we too can cherish this bond as the most precious thing we hold.
Gospel Challenge: It requires courage to prioritize Jesus over our own interests. Before deciding what is right or best, speak honestly to Jesus from your heart about how things are going between Him and you. Remember, this bond is the most precious thing you can hold, and trusting in that can inspire hope and renewed commitment in your faith journey.
