Father Rick’s Two-Minute Homily for Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church  May 25, 2026, John 19:25-34

The Strength of a Mother’s Love

I recall hearing on the news about a courageous mother who tried to rush into her burning home to save her baby. The firefighters gently stopped her as she was already coughing from the smoke. Her incredible strength and willingness to risk her life for her child are truly inspiring. It goes beyond heroism—it’s a heartfelt sacrifice, showing her readiness to give everything for her child’s safety.

Can you picture Mother Mary standing at her Divine Son’s feet, gazing up at Him on the Cross? Imagine her feelings as her pure heart was torn apart by the sword that pierced her Son’s heart. Think of Jesus, nailed through His hands and feet, solely focusing on the comfort and strength His Mother will find in John, His beloved disciple. We are like John, and the Church is also His beloved disciple.

Gospel Challenge:

Whatever difficulty or pain you are experiencing, Mother Mary sees you as she looks up at her Son, Jesus, on the Cross. You are not alone. You have the comfort and strength of Mother’s love in all your pain and suffering. Thank her for saying “Yes” to the Angel Gabriel to be the mother of the Most High. Take a moment to thank her for saying “Yes” to being your mother as she stands under the Cross of her Son and the Cross you are carrying.

Love Your Neighbor!
