We all know how horrific hurricanes can be, causing havoc and loss of life and property. We have all been through it in Florida.
For states along the US Gulf Coast and Eastern Seaboard, hurricane season peaks around this time. Every day, we hear, “Be prepared.” That warning appears on websites, radio, TV, and every other media outlet. It all became so real a few days ago.
State officials tell us to gather our important documents and stock up on food, water, and batteries. If we don’t have storm windows, go to Home Depot and stock up on plywood.
Can you imagine being one of the foolish virgins in today’s gospel, arriving at Home Depot just hours before the hurricane was about to hit? They could see empty shelves by peering through the windows of the locked doors.
Jesus is telling us the same thing about the state of our souls. It is so crucial that he repeats it many times. Why can’t we loll around and do our own thing until the last hour?
A person’s character doesn’t form in a day, a week, or a month. It takes a lifetime. Even more important, it takes time for our hearts to become more like the heart of Jesus.
Listening to God’s Word daily, forgiving and being patient with others, sharing resources, and participating in Holy Communion form our identity and destiny. I need Jesus in Holy Communion to become more like Him each day. Gospel Challenge: We add oil to our flask when we listen to God, forgive, share, and let Jesus shape our hearts. The harder it is, the more our hearts become like His. Don’t fear the gospel’s challenges. How many drops will we add today? Let’s meet the bridegroom.
