Jesus Attracts Opposites

Each parish’s dedication to Jesus and the Church varies. Traditionally, the Church’s role
was well-defined, but now it needs to evolve. Some believe that clergy, religious, and a
few laypeople handle everything, viewing Mass as a weekly duty with no other
expectations.

Recent popes, including Pope Francis, have revived an old understanding of the
Church, emphasizing that all baptized share in Jesus’ mission. Everyone, regardless of
role or status, must live out their faith and share Christ’s love. Some in today’s gospel
were deeply committed to Jesus, including women who surrendered everything to Him,
including finances and possessions.

St. Luke cites women like Mary Magdalene, whom Jesus freed from seven demons, and
Joanna, Herod’s finance manager. Chuza was a key official. What a contrast: a lady of
the night and a court lady together daily. Conversion to Jesus changes everything.

Two individuals from different backgrounds and personalities share a deep love for
Jesus, setting aside differences without losing their uniqueness. This unity in diversity,
as G.K. Chesterton noted, reflects the lion and lamb lying together, as Isaiah 11:6
describes.

Gospel Challenge:
Our society’s divide is growing fast, beyond our control. But those of us in parishes are
committed to Jesus and each other. The time to act is now. Take time to listen to
someone who thinks differently from you.

Love Your Neighbor!
