Pope Paul VI wrote that “modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses” (Evangelii Nuntiandi 41).
The sinful woman’s witness in this Gospel makes her a powerful evangelist. Her actions speak – even though she says no words at all! By lovingly wiping and anointing Christ’s feet, she bears witness to a love that changed her and the world.
I wonder whether St. Paul heard the story of the sinful woman in today’s Gospel during his three-year catechumenate. He persecuted Jesus in His brothers and sisters (the Church) before his conversion. Jesus’ love overwhelmed Paul on the road as he prepared to arrest Jesus’ followers.
The Corinthians were deeply involved in sinful behavior. So Paul told them, “I am the least of the Apostles,” because no matter how grave and frequent their sins were, God’s merciful grace saves them – and us.
The sinful woman knew Christ’s love herself before she washed Jesus’ feet, and with St. Paul, she became a powerful witness to that love that saved her from the world.
Gospel Challenge: After communion, take a moment to ponder someone you will see today. Consider what they may need and be ready to bring out the very best in them. Let your charity and welcome be a witness to Christ’s love for them.
