Fr. Rick’s Two Minute Homily for Wednesday – 12-22-2021 

Wednesday of the Fourth Week in Advent

THE GREATNESS OF THE LORD IN US. 

 Think back on the moments you were on the threshold of your life. Everything changes, and it can be something you work for or something that just fell in your lap. You felt so lucky, so blessed.  

Giving yourself to someone in marriage is one of those moments. Maybe it was receiving your college diploma and beginning the search for a job. I had that moment when the Bishop Edward O’Rourke of Peoria, Illinois, laid his hands on me and ordained me to serve the Lord and His people.  

Would you agree that everything changed insta’ntly and an adventure began with all kinds of ups and downs, joys and challenges? That joy and wonderment happened to Mother Mary when she said “Yes” to God’s invitation to live her life with her. Today’s Gospel recalls when she was with her cousin Elizabeth. After their greeting, she says, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord. My spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” 

Yes, she was on a high, a Jesus High. He was doing something for her from inside her; she couldn’t begin to conceive. Her encounter with the Lord Jesus is possible for us, and we don’t have to do anything but surrender to Him. Our “Yes” with Mother Mary is enough for Him to bring to our awareness how much He is with us. We can live in our human limitedness or live moment by moment in God’s greatness in us.  

Think of God’s greatness like the blue sky. Whatever calm or storms you are experiencing, the blue sky is always there. Soar with Mother Mary until you find the vastness of God’s GREAT sky in you. The opportunities for His Greatness in you are limitless. Go to Him. He is waiting.
