We often see fences around most backyards when driving through any neighborhood. We recognize that security is a significant concern today. But aren’t we protecting more than just our belongings and property?
In today’s gospel, Jesus appreciated what he saw in Nathaniel when he met him and said, “Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him.” Nathaniel had no fences around his mind or heart. He did it because he knew what he had to do to please God. He had no fear.
Like Nathaniel, the three archangels we honor today had no duplicity when doing God’s will. Saint Michael drove Satan out of heaven. St. Gabriel delivered messages to Zechariah and Mother Mary that changed the world. St. Raphael healed Tobias in the Old Testament. God asked, and they delivered. No fuzzies to cloud their mission.
The gospel challenge: Jesus needs us to serve Him as well. People in our lives need to see how much God is with them to support them. We may not have angel’s wings, but we can show our surrender to the Lord and make a difference in saving a brother or sister.
When He puts someone in our mind, reach out to them. Give them a moment of your time. Show them they matter to you through the respect you give them. You might be surprised at how easy it is for them to come to the Lord once they know you love them. Remember, NO FENCES.
