Peer Pressure – Who Do You Want To Be Like?

Throughout our lives, many people influence us. When I was around four or five, my
cousin, Fr. Dick Horvath, affected me deeply. He would visit our family weekly on his
day off, and I would listen to him speak, even though I understood little of what he said.
It was his persona (Christ) that moved me. Without realizing it, he greatly impacted my
calling to become a priest. 

Reflect on who influenced you in your early years—fathers, mothers, siblings, or
friends—who inspired qualities like forgiveness, understanding, and compassion, similar
to Jesus. Consider whether the presence of Jesus remained with you after leaving that
person’s company. 

In today’s gospel, King Herod executed John the Baptist. When John baptized Jesus,
he said, “He (Jesus) must increase. I must decrease.” John aimed to be like Jesus and
remained committed to this goal even in his death. His identity in Christ Jesus gave him
the strength to face all situations with faith and calm. 

Herod’s identity was rooted in public opinion. When ordered to kill John the Baptist, he
was troubled because he admired John’s character. Yet, he viewed Jesus merely as
another person, not his Lord and Savior, and never took the opportunity to know Jesus
personally. Consequently, Herod beheaded John, lacking the courage to do what he
knew in his heart was right.

Gospel Challenge: 
Have a heartfelt chat with Jesus about the people who have influenced your life. Reflect
on how they’ve shaped you, and take a moment to consider the impact you have on
others.

Remember, my friends, it is all grace from the heart of Jesus.
