It’s mysterious to me, but sometimes I hear a voice inside telling me to do something. At other times, a thought keeps returning to call, visit, or pray for someone. I am a slow learner, but I have discovered that the Lord Jesus, God’s Word made flesh, speaks to us loud and clear.
Before Joan of Arc was burned at the stake, the judge asked her how she heard God speak to her. Her reply was, “Through my conscience. How else is he going to speak to me?”
Mother Mary’s response to her Son in today’s gospel reminds me of times when His voice within me urges me to stay calm. Mother Mary was outside a house while Jesus was inside with his disciples. Someone informed him that she was outside, and Jesus seemed to risk offending her: “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the Word of God and keep it.”
Never hearing her Son’s response as an insult, her heart was filled with joy, knowing that anyone can know and love Jesus as she does. And like her, hearing His word and believing it is not enough. We must act on it. How? When a thought keeps coming back to you, the Lord is speaking to you to do something, such as visiting someone, forgiving, or getting involved in a project or ministry. Whatever it is, ACT ON IT and experience the joy of following God’s guidance.
Gospel Challenge: As you do, your connection with Jesus will deepen, as it did with Mary. You won’t be acting alone; Jesus will work through you. Everything becomes possible because “God’s Word is alive and active” (Hebrews 4:12). Listen and take action.
