It’s easy to picture Martha reviewing her grocery list the night before Jesus came to her and her sister Mary’s house for dinner. So many things to do. “I wonder if Mary helped her with the shopping.”
The next day, Martha burst into the living room, interrupting Jesus as he was speaking to her sister. “Tell Mary to help me in the kitchen. I can’t do it all by myself.” Jesus calmly replies, seeing Mary at his feet and listening, “Mary has chosen the better part.” He did not say she did anything wrong by cooking in the kitchen. Rather, something more important could have been done in that moment.
Gospel Challenge: We all face choices every day. How do we prioritize? Do we let those choices dictate our actions? Run! Run! Run!
Please consider how many things catch us off guard. Are we in the best state of mind and heart to handle those surprises? Is there any stress?
Speaking of surprises, consider taking a peaceful five or ten minutes with the Lord before your day starts. Imagine sitting with Mary at His feet, listening to Scripture read at Mass that day. All of us face choices daily. How do we choose what’s most important? Reflect on what He might be telling you about those “many things”.
