We all have triggers – automatic reactions to situations or words that happen without conscious thought. Over time, we respond in similar ways, like cheering at a game when our team scores. These reactions are involuntary, shaping our responses without us realizing.
The Corinthians forgot their love for Jesus and the gospel and returned to their old ways, which St. Paul likened to old yeast. A man was living with his father’s wife in an immoral way. The sin was involuntary, yet still culpable, because of many small triggers over time.
Jesus found Himself in a similar situation in today’s gospel. He saw a man with a withered hand in the synagogue. He knew the scribes and Pharisees were up to their old tricks, their triggers, waiting to catch Jesus off guard. In this case, Jesus intentionally challenged the idea of working on the Sabbath. Jesus doesn’t just react to people or situations; He actively creates opportunities for compassion and healing.
This grace of Jesus is in us. Following Jesus and welcoming His love in us for others helps us respond in charity to the needs that come our way, inspiring hope that our actions can make a difference. Gospel Challenge: Jesus couldn’t care less about showing up the scribes and Pharisees. He was intentionally reaching out to all those on society’s margins. Let us fully surrender ourselves to Jesus’ will, so that we actively reach out our hand to the forgotten in society, regardless of what it may cost us.
If that is too difficult in a particular situation, let us ask for the intercession of Blessed Rosmini, who calls us to be open to any work of charity that comes our way, if we have the means and ability to respond.
