Saturday 25TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
Luke 9:43b-45
The unknown can be frightening when faced alone.
Jesus asked his disciples to pay attention because He told them that He would surrender himself into the hands of men. They couldn’t grasp this saying. Deep down, they probably knew something terrible was going to happen to Jesus. They couldn’t face that possibility.
I can see them telling each other but not Jesus, “You ask him what He means.” “No, you ask Him.” It’s human nature to clam up when we are afraid. Then Luke tells us, “It’s meaning was hidden from them, so they should not understand it.” But, I question, was its meaning hidden from them because they did not ask Jesus what He meant? If they had asked Him, they might have had the strength to support Jesus in His Passion.
The gospel challenge: Is there someone you need to ask a question but are afraid to approach them? Don’t do it alone. Go to Jesus first in prayer and then go to that person with Him in your heart. My friend, “Courageously Live the Gospel” (Bishop Gregory Parkes).
