Friday night, our school put on the play Beauty and the Beast. After hearing confession from 6 to 7 pm, I caught the last 20 minutes of the play. When I walked into the parish center, all the lights were off. I could only see a few feet in front of me from the light shining in from the entrance. I heard a commotion on the stage but saw nothing. Then, suddenly, the lights came on, and there was a burst of color that flooded my eyes. The children’s colorful costumes and background grabbed my attention as the play continued. I completely forgot the darkness.
In today’s gospel, Jesus tried yet another image to reveal His identity to the Pharisees. Wow! They were so stubborn. They could not see the Light standing and speaking right in front of them. Imagine that! Every time Jesus tried to turn on the Light in their minds and hearts, their wills shut that door. I think of walking into the parish center last night, closing the door, stepping on people’s toes, bumping into them, falling over. What nonsense!
This experience makes me think about how dark our sins keep us from seeing the Light of Jesus. Yet, he will keep shining on my mind and heart to reveal how gracious His mercy can be if only I don’t keep shutting the door.
We would have missed much in the play if the stagehand had never turned on the parish center lights? I invite you and your family and friends to embrace the Light shining in your darkness. Confessions every evening continue Monday through Friday, 6-7 pm. How different and more beautiful the world Jesus sees and wants to see with you. Do not be afraid, my friend. I will be there with Jesus waiting for you. Peace.
