In The Acts of the Apostles, we read that as persecution began in Jerusalem, lay people-that is, ordinary members of the church, not ordained clergy-scattered to the four winds to preach the Word. Everyone left except the apostles. This shows how important Jesus sees all members of his Church, not just the leaders, in spreading the Gospel.
Stories hold a unique power. We flock to cinemas, immerse ourselves in novels, and share jokes that are essentially stories. Often, we find ourselves mirrored in these narratives. Sharing our faith operates on a similar principle.
A person who hasn’t experienced the Lord firsthand may not be receptive to dogma and Church teachings. However, they will be captivated by your personal stories, which make Jesus a tangible figure they can relate to.
But they will listen to your stories. Our life stories and experiences make Jesus a real person people can relate to. Before people can eat the Bread of Life at the Eucharist, they need to eat the bread that gives them life from our witness.
When you tell someone about your faith journey and how Jesus called you to Himself, you will see him doing the same for that person, calling that person to Himself through you. Why? Because faith in Jesus begins with a call.
Be the beckoning call to your loved ones. Remember, faith isn’t primarily about doctrines and debates over right and wrong. Faith is a bond with God and with others. By sharing your faith journey, you become a conduit for Jesus to call others to Himself through you. This is the essence of being a ‘call’ to others.
Gospel Challenge: Jesus’ first words to all his disciples were in the call, “Come, follow me.” Now go to the four winds and share the good Word the Lord has written in your heart.
