There is more to Jesus’ call than just following a career. Jesus invites us into a living relationship with Him. We recognize the difference between working for an employer and lovingly serving a family member. There is a vast difference between the two.
The disciples entered into a relationship with Jesus over time. Like everyone else, they heard His voice, saw His face, and observed His expressions. But if we think more deeply, many people heard Jesus’s call, saw His face, and listened to His voice. The rich young man was one of them. Something else is at work here.
Within each of us, there is a small, still voice that Elijah heard in the First Book of Kings. Jesus doesn’t knock everyone off their horse like he did St. Paul. Even then, St. Paul had to listen to that quiet, small voice inside his heart, calling him to follow Jesus.
My friends, in every situation we face daily, Jesus calls us to follow him. Listen to his voice within. Jesus spent the night in prayer, choosing whom he would call to be his 12 Apostles. Among them were Simon and Jude.
The Gospel Challenge: Many voices compete for our attention each day. We choose whether to listen or ignore each one. Jesus is one of those voices we hear inside. Go to His presence within your heart. Listen for that still, small voice filled with peace. Then, do what Jesus tells you to do. Follow Jesus with the Saints Simon and Jude.
