It is not likely that the man in the gospel who couldn’t walk stayed by the pool 24/7. He had to eat, sleep and do all the essentials. For 38 years, someone had to tend to his needs. Yet, he tells Jesus, he has no one to put him in the healing pool when the waters are stirred. “Someone beats me in,” he says, “while I am on my way.”
“I have no one to put me in.” So how can the lame man then say, “While I am on my way, someone else gets in before me.” Is someone helping him, and are they just too slow? That seems unlikely.
Jesus is making His point; no one but Jesus can get us out of the messes our sins cause us. Maybe we are the man lying by the pool, unable to grow in a relationship, wanting to do good but always finding an excuse. Perhaps we are enthusiastic when we start a new adventure, but the fire soon goes out, and we are looking for something else to fulfill us.
Go before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and let Him ask you what He asked the man in the gospel, “Do you want to be well?” Tell Jesus what is in your heart. If, in His mercy, He reveals a sin you committed, tell Him you will meet Him soon in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
