Imagine this woman approaching Jacob’s well. She has heard of Jesus and His miracles, and she wonders what it might be like to meet Him. Then she dismisses the thought, thinking, “Oh, don’t be silly girl,” He’ll never have anything to do with a person like you. `Then comes all the reasons: “I’m not holy enough. Shoot! I have had five husbands, and I am living with a man now who isn’t my husband. My own people don’t even talk to me. Besides, he’s a Jew and a man who wouldn’t give me the time of day.
What is happening here? What did that man just say to me? “Give me a drink.” Is he insane? Who is this stranger? I recognize he’s Jewish. His accent gives him away. How does he know so much about me? He seems unlike anyone I have ever met. Doesn’t he know Jews and Samaritans have nothing in common—such as touching cups, dishes, food, drink, and worship spaces? Yet, beyond these prejudiced barriers and expectations, he still treats me as a person—not a pagan, Samaritan, or lawbreaker.
Reflecting on her feelings, she thinks, “I want to be as free as he is.” After a warm conversation, she begins to wonder, “So He is the Christ! Is this how the Messiah acts? I really want to be like that — free from all the taboos and lies that have kept me feeling so alone, no matter how many lovers I’ve had.” Just from this one conversation, I realize I can be like that too. It’s such a heartwarming feeling! I want to share with everyone I know, ‘Someone finally loves me for who I genuinely am.’ My legs might not be able to carry me fast enough to town because I’m so excited! I truly hope everyone can experience this kind of freedom and joy. Gospel Challenge: This woman’s encounter with Jesus reveals her hidden thoughts and her doubts about being worthy of His love. When you come to Jesus in Holy Communion, and He asks, “Give me a drink,” what feelings or thoughts will run through your mind? Love Your Neighbor!
