After the example of my Mom and Dad, two people influenced my faith life more than anyone. The first was our rector in the seminary, Fr. Anthony Meredith. He had a fantastic way of connecting life with faith. Every day is a story in itself, and Fr. Anthony had a way of helping our community see the Lord working in that story by listening to us. More, I experienced the presence of Christ as we shared. He taught me the importance of keeping in touch with life’s ups and downs. Jesus is in all of them.
The second person who most influences my life of faith is Fr. Gordon. He is a man of few words, but his example evangelizes more than any book you could read or any course you could attend. Consider how much he suffers and how much it costs him to celebrate Mass. He reminds me of Pope John Paul the Great, who struggled till there was no more struggle in him.
Today we celebrate the Feast of St. Mark, who wrote a gospel. He wasn’t one of the twelve but came to know Jesus through his companion, St. Peter. Peter set an example for Mark to follow. As a result, he ended up evangelizing through a gospel he authored.
The first movement of evangelization is listening with an open heart. The second is watching what another is doing. The third movement of evangelization is sharing who Jesus is for you. You do it through listening with an open heart and setting a good example for others to follow.
