When I got home from school, I could hear my Mom saying, “Ricky, will you please clean up that mess in the kitchen for me.” “But Mom, I didn’t make it,” was my reply. “I know,” she said, “But do it because you love me.” I was happy to clean it up. It took less time than our conversation. Wow! My Mom was wise. Whenever my initial response to do something I don’t want to do is “No,” I recall her words, “Do it because you love me.”
It is incredible how everything changes when you do things out of love for God or someone else. When Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would be the mother of the Most High (God), she wasn’t like me coming up with an excuse, “I didn’t make the mess.” I can hear her heart screaming, “Yes.” She wanted to please God all her life. It wasn’t ever about her but about God and others.
She carried her joy of bearing God’s Presence to her cousin Elizabeth. She didn’t just pop in and see how her cousin was doing. Instead, she stayed for three months, helping with the daily chores. And her joy grew with each dish she washed and the bed she made.
Gospel Challenge:
It’s ok if our initial reaction to something we must do for someone is “No.” However, Jesus must filter through our human responses to uncover our love for Him and others. Then, when those opportunities arise, hear Jesus say in the quiet of your heart, “Do it because you love me.” Thanks, Mom.
