It’s easy to picture Martha reviewing her grocery list the night before Jesus came to her and her sister Mary’s house for dinner. So many things to do. “I wonder if Mary helped her with the shopping.”
The next day, something happened when Martha burst into the living room and interrupted Jesus as he was speaking to her sister. “Tell Mary to help me in the kitchen. I can’t do it all by myself.”
Jesus calmly replies, seeing Mary at his feet and listening, “Mary has chosen the better part.” He did not say she did anything wrong by cooking in the kitchen. There was something more important she could do at that moment.
The Gospel Challenge: We all face choices every day. How do we prioritize? Do we simply let those choices control our actions? Run! Run! Run!
Please consider how many things catch us unprepared. Are we in the best state of mind and heart to deal with those surprises? Is there any stress?
Speaking of surprises, consider taking a peaceful five or ten minutes with the Lord before your day starts. Imagine sitting with Mary at His feet, listening to Scripture read at Mass that day. All of us face choices daily. How do we choose what’s most important? Reflect on what He might be telling you about those “many things”.
