Peer Pressure – Who Do You Want To Be Like?

Many people influence us throughout our lives. My cousin, Fr. Dick Horvath, influenced me when I was about four or five years old. He visited our family weekly on his day off. I would sit and listen to him speak, even though I understood little of what he said. It was his persona (Christ) that touched me. Without realizing it, he greatly impacted my calling to become a priest.  

It could be helpful to think about who influenced us during our early years. Fathers, mothers, siblings, and friends all leave an impact on us as we grow. Is there anyone who inspired you to be more forgiving, understanding, and compassionate like Jesus? Did the Presence of Jesus stay with you after you left that person’s presence?  

In today’s gospel, King Herod martyred John the Baptist. When John baptized Jesus, he declared, “He (Jesus) must increase. I must decrease.” John aspired to be like Jesus and stayed faithful to that goal even in his death. He found his identity in Christ Jesus, which helped him face all circumstances with courage and peace.   

Herod’s identity depended on what people thought of him. So, when he was told to kill John the Baptist, he felt troubled because he admired John’s character and Christ Jesus. However, he saw Jesus as just another person, not his Lord and Savior. He never took the chance to get to know Jesus personally. As a result, Herod ordered John’s beheading. He lacked the strength to do what he knew was right.

Gospel Challenge: 

Have a heartfelt chat with Jesus about the people who have influenced your life, just like John and Herod. Reflect on how you’ve been shaped by them, and take a moment to think about the impact you have on others.
