MY EYE AND MY TREASURE

When I line up a shot to hit a golf ball, I pick out the smallest target I can find in the distance. I am close to hitting that target nine times out of ten. I purposely do not look at the hazards, like water or sand or any trouble. Because that is where my ball will likely end up, You could say that the smallest target, the last thing I look at, is my treasure for that particular swing. I read this tip on a golf sight.

In today’s gospel at Mass, Jesus says, “The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light; but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.” It is amazing how God created us. Our body automatically responds to what we see. Like my body will obey the last thing I see, a tiny target where I can hit my next shot or a hazard that carries an extra stroke penalty.

Consider what your treasure is. You can look away if your eye lands on a hazard for your soul. But, if that is the last thing you see, your subconscious will record it and play it repeatedly. It will eat you up. The mind’s subconscious cannot distinguish between right and wrong, good or bad, real or imagined. It seems real if you wake up in the middle of a dream until you come to your senses. The last image you see becomes your reality. Now it is your treasure.

So, Jesus makes a lot of sense. “The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light; but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.” So our hearts will always follow our treasure.
