Our parents give us our names at birth, which stick with us throughout our lives. We get a driver’s license or identification card, usually in our teens. We need an identification card to get on a plane, to get a passport, and to open a bank account, among other things.
The scribes and Pharisees are doing something similar with Jesus, trying to verify His identity. He was working miracles and teaching everywhere He went. To top it off, vast crowds were following Him. They had to get a handle on Jesus before He got out of control.
Jesus caught on, of course, and asked the question that seemed like a puzzle. King David called the Messiah “My Lord.” Jesus was asking how David’s son could be his Lord.
The crowds were amazed at the scribes, and Pharisees had something to ponder, could Jesus be the Messiah? In another place, they said they knew where he came from; the town of Nazareth. But Jesus was born in the city of King David, Bethlehem.
Gospel Challenge:
I need to reflect on the identity of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle in church. Is my behavior in thought, word, and deed worthy of Jesus? When I leave his presence in the church, is my thought, word, and deed behavior worthy of his Divine Presence in other people?
Please, God, my faith will grow in the Real Presence of Jesus wherever I am and whoever is with me.
