I have often wondered why some people have a deep love and commitment to the holy Mass. Some people even attend mass daily all their lives. What do they see and experience that makes the Supper of the Lord the essential part of their lives?
Our gospel today presented a challenge to the Pharisees. Jesus was watching his disciples pick corn and prepare it for consumption. The Pharisees couldn’t believe how blatantly the disciples were breaking the law. How could Jesus sit back and do nothing to stop them?
Picking corn and preparing it for consumption was a man-made law, a human interpretation of the third commandment to keep the Sabbath holy. Jesus told them He was Lord, even on the Sabbath. The question that burns in my heart daily: Is Jesus Lord of my Sabbath, whom I honor and respect? Or am lord of my Sabbath and do whatever I wish?
How did I come to that conclusion if Jesus is no longer the Lord of my Sabbath?
