How many times have I blessed myself with holy water, not giving it a second thought? When the priest poured holy water over our heads, we became children of God. From that moment holiness of God’s own Son lives in us.
Not long after my ordination, someone asked me to bless their house. The young couple said that strange things were happening in the house. I got my holy water and started blessing the house, sprinkling everywhere.
All of a sudden, two bay doors opened up by themselves. I saw footprints run across the bed, and more bay doors opened. I went around the corner, and a rug fluffed up, but no one was there. In a small room in the basement was a table and wall covered with blood. It seemed that someone sacrificed something in that room.
When the two demoniacs in the gospel saw Jesus, they cried, “What have you to do with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the appointed time?” At the beginning of each Mass, we confess our sins and ask forgiveness so we may be worthy to receive Jesus and his holiness in Holy Communion.
Gospel Challenge:
If holy water chases a demon from a house, what can the very Body and Blood of Jesus do in us? Renounce any sin that separates you from God and anyone in your life. And whenever possible, bless yourself with holy water as a reminder of the authority of Jesus over sin and all evil.
