How often do we have plans, maybe golfing or boating, when it is pouring down rain? That can be a real bummer if all you do is get wet. But what happens if you forget your plans and stand in the rain for a moment or two so you can feel it? The rain is soaking, but a moment’s reflection lets us experience its freshness and coolness in our spirits as it splashes on our faces.
The people of our Lord’s time just heard words he spoke (wet), not how they could change their lives (fresh, cool spirit). They wanted a sign for Jesus to prove He was the Messiah (wet). Then they wouldn’t have to enter into a relationship with Him (fresh, cool spirit).
Jesus offered them the sign of Jonah. Like Jonah was in the belly of a whale for three days, Jesus would be in the belly of the earth for three days until He rose. I wonder how long He will be in the belly of my life until I experience the freshness of living with Him moment by moment.
Gospel Challenge:
At the preaching of Jonah, the people repented. Lord Jesus, I am sorry for paying more attention to my thoughts and how I want things to go. I don’t share my day with you as it is happening. I don’t want to be an orphan anymore. I want to be your brother, your sister who trusts you enough for you to care for everything.
If it rains at my golf game, that’s ok. We will be together. It will work out.
