“How sweet it is,” (as Jackie Gleason would say in the TV show The Honeymooners) to go to a friend’s house, put your feet, maybe take a nap, or relax. That may have been something Jesus wanted to do when he went to Simon Peter’s house. But first, he had something more pressing.
He knew Peter’s mother-in-law was sick in BED with a fever. He sought her out. Jesus is Lord and has authority over all illnesses and death. He is drawn to all that ales us like two magnets are drawn together. It’s like He can’t help it. It’s in His nature to heal.
Think of the teacher who knows a student is struggling. The wise teacher doesn’t just pile on more work or give the student extra time after class. The wise teacher knows there is a problem in the student’s life. A little chat, some care, and concern over the student’s heart will reveal what is hurting.
Jesus knows how pain and worry can distract us. Like a person lying in bed with the door locked. You knock on the door and say, “Do you need anything?” And all you hear is a grumbling, tired voice inside saying, “Leave me alone.”
Well, Jesus won’t leave us alone because of his compassion. He suffers with us. He enters our home, stands over us, and rebukes our fevers in each of us right now. Listen to Him address that fever and condemn it.
Gospel Challenge:
Even if we don’t know what is keeping us in our bed of pain, Jesus does. He has the authority to heal our illnesses. He can even heal a broken heart. Keep repeating all day, “Jesus, I trust in you.” And hear him say, “I got this.”
