September 27, 2021, Monday 2th WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
Luke 9:46-50
“Just chill.”
“An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest.” How many times does a thought spoken out loud progresses into an argument like the disciples? “Hey, hey! The Rays clinched the Eastern Division last night.” “Oh, yea,” comes a reply, “Well, if we hadn’t had so many injuries, we would have clinched again!” And off they are running. No one wins these arguments. These can happen almost daily, at least in our thoughts.
I can’t see Jesus rolling his eyes as the argument pursues. He doesn’t use words but experience. He takes a child who had little value in that culture. It’s natural to think of people who oppose us, as least in our eyes. But what value they have to us! “Whoever receives a child such as this, receives Me.” But there is more. We “receive the One who sent Me.”
The gospel challenge: If you hold a different view on something than a family member, a friend, or a colleague, great. Chill out! Have another go with them. But this time, listen to them. No harm is done if you disagree. You might discover that the least becomes the greatest. Communion is a great experience, more so with people, we differ. Seek, and you will find.
